Tell us about your fitness journey.
I struggled with my body image from puberty, at age 11, until two years ago when I joined Farmgirl. I hated my 15-year struggle of constantly comparing myself to other girls, media images, and my mental image of what I should be. I joined gyms, took fitness classes, ran cross country, dieted, contemplated bulimia, and spent some years convinced that I was just “big boned” and could never achieve my fitness and body goals.
During my two year Masters program, I watched the changes in two of my friend’s bodies, practically drooling with jealousy and seething with self-loathing. When I finally mustered the courage to ask what they were doing to look so amazing, they told me about crossfit and their trainer Jenni who led an all women’s class. I had little faith that I would succeed in reaching my longtime fitness fantasy, however six weeks prior to the opening of Farmgirl, I took a leap of faith and followed Jenni through the fulfillment of her vision; I haven’t once looked back. I have never looked better, felt physically healthier, or been happier in my own mind and skin. My circulation increased, my immune system strengthened, and the pain I used to feel in my joints magically disappeared. Two years later I have achieved what I once thought impossible and have surpassed my fitness vision!
Why did you initially join Farmgirlfit? What was your goal when you started?
I am one of the original Farmgirl members, starting two years ago in 2011. I worked with Jenni for six weeks prior to the opening of Farmgirl, swinging kettlebells and box jumping stairs in the Spokane city parks.
When I joined Farmgirlfit my goal was to “tone” my body and feel comfortable in my own skin; my goal has definitely been achieved.
What has been your greatest fitness (performance) accomplishment so far? Do you have a performance goal?
My greatest fitness achievement was last Spring when I participated in the WOD Warrior. Prior to competing in this competition, I was unsure how my fitness “stacked up” against other women in our region. I was pleasantly surprised to find myself place in the top five of the novice division. This gave me a sense of accomplishment and pride and made me fully aware of how Farmgirl has helped me reach my fitness goals.
My current performance goals are to master the kipping pull-up and to conquer my fear of the 24″ box. After successfully achieving the double under, I moved on to pull ups and box jumps.
How has FGF helped you become more healthy / When it comes to your health, what goals do you have?
Prior to joining farmgirl I struggled with “eating healthy.” I tried fad diets, counted calories, cut out sugars but could never sustain momentum and eventually went back to fast foods and sugar/preservative laden snacks.
In the past two years I have become more conscious of how foods affect my energy, mood, digestion, and build. Instead of seeking food for comfort I now seek food as fuel. Through working out, I have found that my body craves nutrition.
My favorite thing about Farmgirlfit is ______
The camaraderie and supportive environment.
