Names and ages:
Annette: “Happily Unemployed”
Stephanie: School Psychologist
My favorite exercise at FGF is:
Annette: I really like the option of rowing instead of running during workouts. I like squats because they used to be so hard and hurt my knees and now they don’t!
Stephanie: Box jumps! It is one of the few exercises (probably only exercise actually) that came pretty easily to me and I could improve on quickly.
My least favorite exercise at FGF is:
Annette: Plate Pushes (enough said)
Stephanie: Bears. Really anything ground to overhead. Ok, I really don’t like any overhead lift…
Tell us about your fitness journeys.
Annette: I have never exercised regularly. I would always try different things and never stick to it. I started biking a couple of years ago, which I love, but it can’t be done year round.
Stephanie: I was pretty active as a kid as well as through high school. Definitely slowed down when I started college — guess you can’t eat whatever you want, not exercise and expect no body changes! I did a few things here and there (mostly giving 50 percent on a bike/elliptical at the gym, some yoga here and there and running every once in a great while). This trend of on again/off again exercising continued for several years. Even when I ran and worked out consistently I never felt like I was improving which resulted in less frequent trips to the gym. I found whatever excuse I could not to exercise. A couple of years ago we moved back to Spokane, after living in Richland for a year, and joined a gym. I managed to get into a consistent exercise routine and I did see improvement, but still hated exercise. My attitude towards fitness has definitely changed for the better since joining FGF!
If you could tell your Farmgirlfit story, how would it read?
Annette: My daughter, Heather, kept telling me and my other daughter, Stephanie, to try Farmgirlfit. I was very skeptical, not being athletically inclined, but finally a year ago we joined and we are still doing it! If it weren’t for my daughters’ encouragement and support and the trainers being so positive and kind, I may not have stuck with it. I went twice a week last year and increased to three times a week this year. I love the way the workouts are set up to meet all fitness levels and the trainers are so willing to make it work for each person! I really look forward to going to Farmgirlfit and now I actually think working out is fun!
Stephanie: My mom and I joined at the same time after it was suggested to us many times by my sister. I kept asking for advice on what kind of workouts to do since I felt like I had plateaued with my usual routine and she responded with some ideas and a reminder to try out her gym. We were ready to join after our first workout at FGF (despite that first workout consisting of split lunges and Turkish get ups — definitely hurt the day after!).
What has been your greatest fitness (performance) accomplishment so far? Do you have a performance goal?
Annette: When I look back to a year ago when I first started, I can really see so many small accomplishments that mean so much. Just being able to jump rope shows me that my coordination and endurance has improved immensely. My greatest overall accomplishment might be biking up Doomsday Hill during Spokefest.
Stephanie: I can deadlift (have to watch that curved back) and back squat my body weight (well, my body weight of 20 weeks ago at least!). It is so much fun to see improvement over time-an increase of a couple pounds feels like a huge accomplishment! I have several performance goals. For the short term I’m just focusing on my form during lifts and on remaining active during my pregnancy. I’m already looking forward to getting back into my FGF routine (maybe adding a day or two ) late next summer! Eventually my goals are to complete a rope climb and to be able to do headstand pushups.
How has FGF helped you become more healthy, and when it comes to your health, what goals do you have?
Annette: Going to FGF has made me much more active and health conscious overall. I’ve lost close to 20 pounds over the last year. I have more to go, but getting those pounds off has made a difference in my everyday life. I am able to do so much more than I could a year ago. A goal I have is to have normal blood pressure without medication along with losing weight.
Stephanie: I feel stronger and more fit than I ever have. When I started FGF I began early morning workouts which was new for me. I find that going early in the morning puts me in a better mood for the rest of my day! I was definitely feeling higher levels of stress and anxiety when I first joined FGF but quickly noticed a change for the better after a few workouts! My goal is to be more conscientious of nutrition. I try to eat healthy overall but definitely lack knowledge in the food department!
My favorite thing about Farmgirlfit is:
Annette: I love how everyone is together but doing their own thing at their own level. There are some amazing athletes there but I have never once been made to feel that I don’t belong. Everyone has such an accepting and encouraging attitude.
Stephanie: The sense of community and the trainers. It’s definitely fun attending with family members as well! I drag my husband along to the coed group workouts which he is enjoying so far! I love how there are always fun events and challenges at FGF!
How have you integrated the Farmgirlfit mission outside of the gym?
Annette: I think FGF has made exercising routine for me. I want to keep it up so I don’t lose any of the ground I have gained. It has helped my endurance when I bike also.
Stephanie: I’ve definitely been more active overall. My husband has started a more consistent routine as well so I’m hoping that exercising regularly and trying to live a healthy lifestyle now will help shape how our kids view fitness and lead to fun family activities in the future. I’m excited to plan activities and outings that we can do together!
When you’re not pumping iron at FGF, what does the rest of your life look like?
Annette: I’ve been married for 30 years and we have three amazing kids that I adore and love to be with. We are happily preparing for our first grandchild due in June! (Stephanie, mom to be, is still able to attend FGF because of the adaptations that can be made) Depending on the season, I love to crochet, cook, read, decorate, bike, walk with my husband and our dog Striper, boat, watch Gonzaga and Whitworth basketball and just recently Seahawks Football!
Stephanie: Mostly just spending time with friends and family. We’re currently prepping for the arrival of Stephanie’s baby this June!
Any advice for new members, or your fellow Farmgirls?
Annette: I think that appreciating all of the small accomplishments really helps. If I’m not increasing the weight I’m lifting, I feel good knowing my form is improving.
Stephanie: Don’t be afraid to ask other members for advice. I remember other members introducing themselves and offering advice on specific workouts or on their experience with FGF overall which was incredibly helpful! Whenever I’m a little lost I look around at the other members to get back on track with the grind!
