Name and age: Allison Kackman, 39
Occupation: Hospice and Palliative Care Nurse Practitioner, and for fun I work 8 hours a week at the jail.
My favorite exercise at FGF is: By far BEARS! [FGF: WHAT?!?! That’s a first.] I know they are not everyone’s faves, but for me I hurt the most the days after we do these. I think it works every muscle in my body! I also love deadlifting, I feel the strongest in that lift.
My least favorite exercise at FGF is: My top two are Turkish Get-ups and those alternating jump lunges, I have balance and knee issues and I nearly fall over every time!
Tell us about your fitness journey.
This has been a roller coaster. About eight years ago I started losing weight and going to a gym. I became a gym rat and began eating really unhealthy. I lost a bunch of weight but not the right way so of course when I stopped giving it my attention I gained it all back with a vengeance. Slowly over the past four years I have been working not to worry about my waist size but on how I feel. I love being active. Farmgirlfit was a huge turning point in that journey for me. Now I balance FGF with running/walking/hiking and this spring I plan on adding biking.
If you could tell your Farmgirlfit story in 100 words or less, how would it read?
Well it all started with a conversation with Ty Miller and Jodi Kittel. Ty said “I want us to do this, you aren’t going to like it but I want you to try it!” Well, needless to say I began to love it. I arrived barely even able to lift the bar and now I am steadily doing level 2-3. I have found that with the physical strength gains I am also becoming a stronger person internally as well.
What has been your greatest fitness (performance) accomplishment so far? Do you have a performance goal?
I always have goals, regardless of whether its the gym, my family, or my job. For me I am super excited each week at the increased weights I use and getting better at things like double unders and pull ups. For me this year I plan on continuing to strive for fewer pull up bands and hope to one day kip my butt up there, do a 20-inch box jump and be able to string at least 10 double unders together! For now I am using a green band, a 12-inch box and at this point can get a run on one double under followed by a single and so on…
How has FGF helped you become more healthy / When it comes to your health, what goals do you have?
Oh where do I start! With the coaches and other members it has been a great opportunity to share and explore different food plans and strategies. I have definitely made a lot of strides. I gave up fast food January of 2013 and with one exception (OMG I got sick!) I have kept to it. With our Sugar Challenge I have given up Diet Coke now for seven weeks (at one point I would drink nearly a case a day), and now I am exploring the Paleo route and loving it! Since joining FGF I have lost 30 pounds over the past year and a half and plan to continue that until my body is comfortable.
My favorite thing about Farmgirlfit is ________
The coaches are so fantastic! They are like no others I have ever met and they are all in one gym! They are so AWESOME! They are so concerned about things like us doing things correctly, but they also push us when we get lazy. I have actually had Jenni N. remove the kettle bell in my hand and replace it with a heavier one They inspire us so much. I also think that the coolest of the cool all work out there. The women are all incredible and I believe we all push one another to achieve greatness not only in the purple room but outside!
How have you integrated the Farmgirlfit mission outside of the gym?
I feel like I push myself even harder in all aspects of my life and my girlfriends and I seemingly am doing more stuff around exercise, which I LOVE!
When you’re not pumping iron at FGF, what does the rest of your life look like?
Well between working two jobs and having a family at home I stay pretty busy. But I try and spend lots of times with the girls and I am learning to explore more recipes as I love to cook.
Any advice for new members, or your fellow Farmgirls?
Don’t get scared! The pain is worth every amount of effort you put in! And you will not find a better place to gain physical and inner strength than in the purple room!
